Baseball Playoffs ~ Game Two

Before I start this post I just wanna say that it's kinda hard to see how we made playoffs this year. There were so many teams that had much better records than we did. But in the league we play in, the top teams from each division (there are two), in each half make playoffs. We won our division in the first half so automatically made the playoffs. Now on this particular night we played the number one team all season long. And without further adieu...

June 8th, 2011

The A's vs. The Cubs

Notice the date to this night's game is a week from the last. We had to wait for the fields to dry out after the big rain storms we had the week before.

Elisha got a hit tonight, one that surprised him and he didn't run at first. Then he took off faster than I've ever seen him run to first base. He made it there safely with time to spare thankfully.

Leading off...

The A's played so well against this team. It's funny they hit a funk mid-season and kinda of came out of it towards the end, but when they played the Cubs they came out of no where.

Leading off of second, after stealing it...

I forgot to mention that we were minus one player during this game too. One of our better hitters and our 2nd baseman. Because all the rains pushed back our games, he had a scheduled vacation with his dad that took him out of the country for the summer. Oh well, I guess.

Elisha stole third too...

The score went back and forth this game, us leading, them leading, us leading. But at the bottom of the fifth the score was 6-8 them. In this league if a game is called (usually due to the sun going down, there are no lights on the fields) then the score will automatically go back to the last complete inning. So if this game was called before the sixth inning was completed the Cubs would automatically win.

Bases were loaded and the pitcher walked the kid at bat. Elisha got to jog home for a point...

Which put us in a predicament indeed. You see we also play in a league where there is a five point rule, meaning at this age a team can't score more than five points per inning (to hopefully keep a team from being absolutely slaughtered). Except that rule doesn't apply during the sixth inning. The sixth inning is open so a team is allowed to score as many points as they can.

Playing third base...

(Due to the attitude and unfortunate disrespect our third baseman had this night, Elisha played most of the game at third. He didn't get anyone out, but he played his heart out and it was awesome to see.)

During the sixth inning our boys were on fire! We scored four runs with one out and two boys on base. The problem was the sun was already at the top of the mountain and fading fast. We all knew if we didn't move fast the game would be called and the Cubs would still win. And this particular coach we were playing would waste time if needed to guarantee a win.

He cracks me up when he really is concentrating. His tongue is always out or he is blowing bubbles with his gum...

Our coach felt he really had no choice but to send our two boys on base home, get them tagged out and hope we could hold them off. We were up by two.

Ready for steal...

We looked so good until the bottom of the sixth, then it all fell apart. Our pitcher walked two boys. The parents on the other side yelled and yelled some more. Things like...

He can't do it.

Just stand there and let him walk you.

He's too upset to throw strikes.

And our pitcher couldn't handle the pressure. In the midst of their constant screaming, yelling, cheering (if you could call it that), he fell apart. Crying on the mound. And still they wouldn't let up. Play fair people. This is a nine year old boy. What if it were your kid?

I love this picture of Elisha pointing to the pitcher/catcher/firstbaseman to watch the boy attempting to steal...

And that's how it ended. Our pitcher walked seven boys and they won by one point in the fading sun, yelling like a bunch of wild monkeys, excited to have the beat the only team that really bested them during the season (they only lost two games, both during spring break when four of their best players were out of town - the last time we played the Cubs we tied them, the closest any team really came to beating them with all their players all season long).

But did they really win? Not in my book. I mean, sure, even if we had the sun in our favor, and we didn't have to take two outs, our boys could have struck out or gotten two outs and they could have come back and won. Or maybe our pitcher still would have faltered, and walked all those boys and they would have emerged victorious, but it would have been a fair win. Not one where adults stood on the fence bullying a nine year old.

Some days, playing sports is so hard. The boys took this loss hard. Elisha and I had to talk it through, he cried a lot. But you know what? Win, lose or tie, they played great. He played great and I told him just how proud I was of him and his team. Sometimes in life we lose hard, we fall hard. Sometimes we win big. The important thing that no matter what, you keep trying, prayin', doing your best, exactly how God called you to live. That's all that matters.

We play in a double elimination league so Game 3 coming up soon....

Baseball Playoffs ~ Game One

Wednesday, June 1st

The A's vs. The Red Sox

Well after being re-scheduled due to rain we finally were able to play! We meaning all of the rest of the team and not Elisha. He hurt his toe on Memorial Day (I know I have yet to post how he did that but I will) and could not play. He was so bummed. But he went and sat in the dugout and cheered his team on until the end, and I sat in the scorekeeper box and did my thing. All while taking pictures of the kids like I do every game.

It was a crazy quick game, over before 7:30 (believe me usually the week night games last until 8:00 or until the game is called because it is too dark. Elisha konked out fast even though he didn't play. It was an interesting game to say the least. It was virtually no challenge to play against the Red Sox tonight and it made us wonder where the awesome team that beat us during the season went (to give us credit though we did beat them twice, once during pre-season and once during regular season).

Final Score: A's 13, Red Sox 2

I would have done all of the Playoff games in one post, but game two is a game that really needs to be a post all in itself. So much good stuff and disappointment all rolled into one.

Sunday ~ June 12th

Went to a friend's challenger baseball game. Nathaniel did a great job hitting the ball and running the bases. He has improved so much! Yay! Nathaniel!

Monday ~ June 13th

It's BBQ time!

Tuesday ~ June 14th

When it's hot, take the games outside, I always say. :)

Wednesday ~ June 15th

We went to watch baptism at church. Yohn was helping baptize the kids. Unfortunately it was too dark to get a picture so here's this one of Elisha waiting for it to start.

Thursday ~ June 16th

Ha! Ha! This happens to be the only picture I took today. It's for the background of the intro on Elisha's baseball slideshow.

Friday ~ June 17th

Stilling working on that slideshow for Saturday morning. I'm such a procrastinator. See the grass backgrounds on #3 and #4? It turned out looking so good!

Saturday ~ June 18th

Elisha won a signed ball by Ray Fosse! One of his coaches personally knows him. Our show no emotions boy was excited to get it but didn't really show it while we were there. I hope his coaches know he really did like it. :)

Bethany's team also had their team party today, so we were running from one place to the next. Can you guess what kind of party they had?

That's it for this week! This is me, signing off....... :0)

Baseball/Softball Chronicles ~ May 23rd - 28th

Tuesday, May 24th

The A's vs. The Dodgers

(The real game)

We finally had an official game against the Dodgers and were seriously expecting a blow out. But they surprised us. Something about playoff positions, I'm not sure, but they basically let us win. They started the bottom of their line up and let the out fielders play the in field the whole game. I was busy trying to keep score in Elisha's coach's book (we weren't home team, but his coach likes a separate book kept to see how each boy is doing at bat) so this is the only shot I got of Elisha. He struggled at bat tonight but played well at third.

Final Score: A's 18, Dodgers 2

Wednesday, May 25th

The Cubs vs. The Rays

Last game of the season, and wouldn't you know it, both of my kids played at the exact same time. And not only that but Bethany's team played against the infamous Rays who only lost one game the whole season up to this point. And guess who plays for the Rays?

My niece Harmony!

This is how she is a lot at the ball fields. Some days I'm surprised her coaches have as much patience as they do, LOL!

In order to explain the last play of the game I needed to show you this picture. It's the bottom of the sixth (final inning) the Rays are down by one with two outs. We're dyin' for a win, for two reasons: 1) It's the Rays, everyone wants to beat them (for various reasons we just won't discuss though) and 2) we haven't had a win in a while and it would be a great way to end the season since we already knew we didn't make play-offs.

Okay back to the picture. See the ball? See Bethany on the right? Yeah, I didn't think she was paying any mind to the game, cuz' she was just standin' there with her hand in her pocket sorta spacing out. But then the pitcher missed the ball and she snapped to life. Seriously I must have taken this picture just a second before, because her whole body jerked and she smiled all big and snatched up the ball....

...then she threw it like this to first base, BARELY getting it there to get the third out! I couldn't believe it! I also couldn't believe that I caught it on camera. I was just snapping at whatever not even looking.

Finals Score: Cubs 9, Rays 8

Yay!

And since it was the final game we took a few pictures...

... and they get their league pins.

Bethany really loved her coaches this year, can you tell?

Ahhh... so sad it is all over!

The A's vs. The Yankees

Since I was running back and forth, and since I knew this boy's team made playoffs (although we really wonder how) I only got a few pics of his game since I spent most of the time at Bethany's field. He hit a foul ball and was walked. Played center and right field and had a decent game so I heard.

I knew it's pretty obvious this boy made it to second but I just wanted to show ya how he is so good at shifting to the ball when he backs up in the out field. He played mostly outfield all year, but his coach told him countless times he was the best outfielder because he paid attention and was always rotating to the ball.

Elisha receiving his league pin.

Final Score: A's 8, Yankees 10

All in all my kids had a great season and progressed a lot. We enjoyed their coaches this year and only had a few minor complaints, mostly about a few of the boys on Elisha's team. Up next... playoffs posts! :)

My Week in Review ~ Project 365

Sunday, June 5th

This is what our weekend mostly looked like. However, Sunday we got the worst of it and at one point Yohn and I were in the preschool with the kids wondering if the parking lot was going to overflow into the building (it's happened before but never in just mere minutes) and we'd have to "evacuate" little ones and take them out in the rainstorm. Thankfully the worst of it lasted all of 7 minutes and the drains had a chance to catch up quickly after that.

Monday, June 6th

I took a few more pictures for the preschoolers slide show.

Tuesday, June 7th

I know it looks like this cloud is out of focus but it's not. That's how the clouds really looked in the sky. My daughter said some of them looked like melted ice cream. I have to agree.

Wednesday, June 7th

He's stealing home! I didn't realize I had this picture until I got home. I don't remember if it was the first baseman or the pitcher who had the ball, but they turned to throw it to him and he was signaling they were already on their way.

Thursday, June 9th

Last night at the ball fields. Bethany doing what Bethany does best.

Friday, June 10th

Last day of school! The kids did a recorder performance during the kindergarten/pre-k graduation. They both had odd expressions but it is the only picture I got with both of them so I'm using it.

Saturday, June 11th

I told her she had to go outside to eat her sunflower seeds because I didn't want the shells everywhere. I looked out the window and saw her sitting on the sidewalk enjoying the sun and thought she looked so cute that she would be the perfect subject for today's picture. (But pay no mind to the weeds or the big ugly trashcan in the background okay)

That's it for me, what about you!

Baseball/Softball Chronicles ~ May 16th - 21st

Tuesday, May 17th

Elisha's team had a game scheduled against the Dodgers but they got rained out. Here we go again!

Wednesday, May 18th

The Cubs vs. The Angels

I unfortunately had snack shack duty and could not see her game. And wouldn't you know it? She turns around and hits a triple without either me or her dad in attendance. Why do you do these things to us kid?

Final Score: Cubs 12, Angels 20

Friday, May 20th

The A's vs. The Dodgers

Yep, you guessed it this was the re-scheduled game. Except there was some major miscomunication between both team coaches and the office because according to them we were supposed to play on Thursday night and so we had no umpire. I'd like to know how both teams could show up on the wrong night though. It really made no sense.

They played a scrimmage game anyways and the boys had a lot of fun. Elisha was walked twice, played the outfield for two innings....

...played short stop one inning...

...backed up third on a steal during that inning....

and covered third base during one inning too.

We didn't keep score because it didn't count but if we had it would have been a lot of nothing to a lot of something and not in the A's favor.

Saturday ~ May 21st

The Cubs vs. The Blue Jays

For some reason I didn't take as many pictures today, but the two I got of my Bethany look great!

She did well at bat, hitting off the kid pitcher once and coming around home twice. Go Bethany!

This game was an upset though because we lost on a balk. Hello Mr. Umpire this is 8 and unders! They don't call balks until 10 and unders. Thanks for losing the game for us we appreciate it.... uh, NOT!

Final Score: Cubs 12, Angels 13 (booooo umpire!!!! boo!!!!)

The A's vs. The Cardinals

I actually wanted a good pic of his hands but the sun was working against me.

Guess who got an awesome hit today?!!!! Yep, he hit it straight into center field resulting in a double and an RBI. Soooo exciting to see him do that. Keep up that confidence E!

It was close until the end when the Cards pulled away.

Final Score: A's 8, Cardinals 10

I had to throw in this sweet picture of Bethany and her friend. They were teammates for the last two years but this year ended up on different teams. Their brothers were playing against each other and they ran through the empty field nearby picking wildflowers (weeds) and catching ladybugs.
