Admittedly this joke took me a few seconds to really get, but when I did I couldn't help but laugh out loud. I could just picture it. Hope it brings you a laugh too!

Self Serve Christmas

A kindly 90-year-old grandmother found buying presents for family and friends a bit much one Christmas, so she wrote out checks for all of them to put in their Christmas cards. In each card she wrote, "Buy your own present" and then sent them off. After the Christmas festivities were over, she found the checks in her desk! Everyone had gotten a Christmas card from her with "Buy your own present" written inside, but without the checks!

Happy Birthday Yohn!

I know I said I'd post these yesterday, but then I fell asleep watching a movie last night and did not get around to it. Oh well, it's only the day after his birthday. Here's what we did on his special day:

First the presents first thing in the morning. The kids did not want to wait until later in the day as Bethany was chomping at the bit to tell him what they got for him. We got him a new "tea mug" and this matching Grinch and hat shirt.

Before being given the responsibility of pastoring the little kids, we used to help out under Gene in Master BLAST (children's church). They have birthday traditions there that must be upheld if your birthday falls on a Sunday so Gene and all the kids in church came crashing into the preschool. First the singing of the birthday song (look carefully and you can see both Elisha and Bethany mouths wide open singing as loudly as possible)...

...complete with all the CHA, CHA, CHA's.

AND then the birthday pie in the face, especially for the birthday boy!

After all the older kids had left it was time to get service started for the smaller kids. This Sunday Yohn practiced using his guitar for praise and worship time and the kids loved it.

And yes, he wore his Grinch clothes to church. Special days call for special clothes, ya know.

We finished the day off by going out to eat and then having a celebratory piece of cheesecake.

Strange picture I know, but I found this steaming trashcan to be rather humerous. It was about 38 degrees outside and Yohn had just put a new liner, apparently warm liner in the trashcan, resulting in the steam.

We also decorated our Christmas tree on Sunday evening!

Bethany's gymnastics session is almost over. She's learned a lot, but it's not something she really loves (even though I've stated before that she does) and so it's something we're going to let go of for a while. She's talking about playing softball again this spring, and we can't be trying to do both, it's just too much.

Ouch.

Tonight we went to see a friend in the hospital. Great idea right? I mean, we're supposed to go see our friends when they are sick. Yeah, apparently not such a great idea for Elisha. After seeing Auntie Sandy with all her wires and stuff he started acting a little weird. I mean kinda strange and quiet. I just thought he didn't know what to think so I went on talking to Sandy. And then all of a sudden... Boom! We look over and Elisha has fainted on the floor, face first. A doctor happened to be walking by and rolled him over and gave him a quick check. At first he suspected a seizure then said he must have just fainted. Poor boy. It was kinda scary.

So yeah, now he's at home watching a movie. He had an ice pack on his face for a little bit but now we've put that back in the freezer. It looks like he's A-okay except for the bruised face. Best I can figure, he didn't handle seeing Sandy like that. We watched the movie Letters to God a months ago and he had nightmares about it. I mean it really bothered him. So now we know no hospital visits for a while.

Bethany has been hovering around him getting things for him and putting on his favorite movie The Karate Kid. It's been so cute to watch her with him.

I've always known our boy was really sensitive, but this has surprised me a little. First the movie and now this. But you know, I really think God is gonna use it someday. I guess I'll just have to pray that He keeps Him from fainting while he's ministering to the sick or injured :)

Working with the kids each Sunday really wears Yohn out. If he chooses to stay up and watch a movie with the kids he usually ends up looking like this within just a few minutes :)

And in this moment Yohn really freaked out. Can you tell why? Thankfully she was only like that for a second and recovered the strength to pull herself up again. Daddy really gave her a talking to about the neck scare.

What a corny meal!
I couldn't help myself, when I decided to cook corn bread and then searched the cupboards for something to go with it, I saw that I had corn and corn bread muffin mix. Yeah, I know there should be some green in there but it was humorous nonetheless.

We made pizza for lunch today with some Boboli pizza crusts. Let me just say now though that next time we'll make our own sauce because neither one of the kids liked the way the sauce tasted and while they ate some of their pizza, they didn't have seconds.

I taught the kids how to play Blockus on Thanksgiving evening and that's all they've been asking to play ever since. It was the very first thing we did Saturday morning, even before we ate! Elisha is actually doing really well now and I have to stop helping him or I'm gonna lose every game!

50th Birthday Party

Gene's 50th can't be topped. I mean I know I might just be sayin' that, but it was a good one. He knew he was having a party but he didn't know the theme. Because he's such a huge movie buff, his wife decided on a Hollywood theme. In this picture he's signing his star on the walk of fame!

Susan had not yet seen his 50 in his hair so while he was signing his star she shouted out, "Oh my gosh, Babe! Your hair!"

This is at the end of the party. Yes, Susan is dressed as Marilyn Monroe and those are Oscars. You can't see it in this picture, they are standing on the red carpet too.

Many of the guests who RSVP'd ahead of time received mini oscars for winning "their category". Yohn won for the best portrayal of Santa Claus. He was up against Tim Allen (from the Santa Clause series), Edmund Gwenn (from Miracle on 34th Street), and well, I can't remember the third one now, but I would vote for Yohn any day cuz' I think he puts in just as good a performance.

We score free tickets to the Warriors game against the Pistons! The Pistons are my team but at half time they were down by 34 points... I was so sad. But at the end of the game it was 99-97 with 20 seconds remaining. And then... AND THEN... They missed the shot and fouled one of the Warriors played who promply made both free throws to put the nail in the coffin. But coming back from a 34 point deficit made it a very exciting second half of the game.

The kids' bookshelf was a mess. They had waaayyy too many books so we had to go through them all and decide which to keep and which to donate. It looks so much better now and they can manage it themselves.
